books to help beginning readers

Our books are created to help teach reading. Some are for the student to have read to them and some they can read alone (depending on their reading level.) They have been used successfully in the classroom with emergent readers, but are fun for fluent readers as well. The colorful character and their antics make them entertaining as well as educational. Students learn while having fun. What a wonderful way to learn. These stories are available in paperback, kindle or nook e-book forms and some have been adapted as power point lessons (see our Power Points page.)

Learning the sounds of vowels is difficult for beginning readers because there are so many different sounds associated with each letter. This book gives your child a memorable story so the short sound of each vowel is easy to learn. Once a child learns the long and short (names) sounds, they are on their way to being able to decipher words. This entertaining story helps beginning readers learn the short sounds for all five of the vowels. The colorful characters remain in children's minds. When they are reading, they will try out the long and short vowel sounds to decipher the words. What a fun and easy way to learn short vowel sounds.

The book includes games to play using the short vowel sounds and there is a recipe for the Happiness Cookies mother vowel bakes in the story. It is impossible to eat these cookies and not be happy.

REVIEW OF THESE
EARLY READER BOOKS

These beginning reader picture books are for the early learner set. The pages are simple and colorfully illustrated. Each book has a couple of activity pages or games at the end that you can do with your child, related to the book content. The five books I reviewed are:
· Get Up, Tom--an early reader book with very limited and repetitive vocabulary

· Pat's Cat--another early reader with slightly more vocabulary

· My Trip to the Funny Farm--a book about numbers and colors for reading aloud

· You Can Count on Me--a counting book about animals to read aloud and have the child count with you

· We Are Opposites You and Me--a book about opposites to read aloud

If you are looking for true phonics readers, these early readers do not fit the bill. The vocabulary words used in the books are not all phonetic words typically found in early phonics readers. However, although I was not particularly impressed with the books, my almost 7-year-old thought they were hilarious and loved reading the readers by himself. He also enjoyed the books that I had to read to him and thought the illustrations were very funny. He asked to read them again. So, perhaps the adage that simpler is better, especially for young children, holds true in this case.
